Virginia Tech KTU exhibits on March 22nd!

The exhibits below are for KTU registered kids and parents in the Virginia Tech Kids' Tech University program on March 22nd!

Exhibit title- "Apples, Bananas, and Lemons"

With various materials, students will build a simple circuit and test various materials to see what will or will not turn on a lightbulb. There will be a brief and presentation on what a circuit is and how one works that the students can reference for help if need be.

Group hosting exhibit- Galipatia Outreach Committee - Holly Schwarzwalder (member)

The Galipatia Outreach committee reaches out to the local community to help students (K-12) learn and become interested in science and engineering.

Exhibit title- "Robotics Exploration Using LEGOs"

Students will use LEGO® MINDSTORMS® to build and program their own robots with the assistance of Virginia Tech graduate students who will guide through the different steps. Robots will be capable of gathering information about the surrounding environment using acoustic, touch, infrared and ultrasound sensors. Different behaviors can be programmed to let the robots react to stimuli, such as start moving when clapping, stop at the edge of a table or follow a line. The students will be exposed to all aspect of design and programming of the robot.

Group hosting exhibit- DySMAC (Center for Dynamic Systems Modeling and Control)
The Center for Dynamic Systems Modeling and Control is affiliated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and includes more than 10 professors and 30 graduate students spanning areas that include Autonomous vehicles, Vibration control, and Robotics, just to mention a few.

Exhibit title- "Eco-bots"
In the 2012 National Science Experiment, 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge, you will build and program a robot to clean up a simulated environmental spill — a mission that in real life would be too difficult or dangerous for humans to carry out.

Part One: Build Your Bot
Assemble your own Eco-Bot, and discover how it  functions and determine what it can do.
Part Two: The Goal is Control
Design a set of control surfaces to program the Eco-Bot to perform a simulated environmental cleanup project.
Part Three: Make a Clean Sweep

Measure the effectiveness of your control surfaces controls by recording how much of the spill is “swept up” by the Eco-Bot.
