Exhibit title- "Extraction Experience"
The goal of the activity “Extraction Experience” is to
separate the mixture of sand, Styrofoam, and staples into its various
components. The kids will be provided with magnets, water, and a spoon. They
must use these to separate the materials and put each component into different
cups.
Group hosting exhibit- Galipatia Outreach Committee
We are part of the Galileo/Hypatia programs in the College
of Engineering. These programs are “living learning” communities of engineering
students who live, work, and socialize together. Opportunities exist within the
programs for professional and academic development, as well as service and
leadership experience. Designed for first year engineering students at Virginia
Tech and run by former program participants, the two programs have grown to
encompass roughly five hundred students.

Exhibit title- "Tallest Tower Construction"
This is an engineering design event in which participants
will work in teams to construct the tallest tower. Using the provided three
sheets of construction paper and tape, teams of 2-3 students will work together
to construct the tallest tower in ten minutes. The design objective is to
achieve the tallest tower that can hold a penny for ten seconds without falling
over. During these ten seconds, the tower may not be touched or otherwise
supported. The penny is not allowed to be taped to the tower. The height of the
tallest tower will be displayed throughout the day so the students have a goal
to reach.
